The Regional Anesthesiology and Acute Pain Medicine Division handles anesthesia given to patients who only need a specific area of their body numb for surgery or an obstetric, gynecologic, abdominal, urologic or orthopedic procedure. Physicians offer epidurals, nerve blocks and spinals, which only block sensation in the lower half of a person’s body. Patients who receive regional anesthesia may remain awake during their procedure or be given IV sedation.
