Sabina Preter, M.D., PH.D.
Dr. Preter was educated in the European medical tradition in France and Germany with electives at Children’s Hospital at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Preter also obtained a Master’s and Ph.D. in Psycholinguistics and Special Education. Dr. Preter obtained her psychiatric training in New York City at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and New York Presbyterian Hospital, Payne Whitney Clinic. After completing her training, Dr. Preter was Assistant Professor of Psychiatry in the Department of Psychiatry of the University of Mississippi Medical Center where she taught students and residents. Dr. Preter’s clinical work at the University of Mississippi focused on Community Psychiatry and she founded the first child and adolescent psychiatric clinic in a rural community. Upon her return to New York City, Dr. Preter commenced her private practice of child, adolescent and adult psychiatry and she teaches in the Department of Psychiatry of New York Presbyterian Hospital, Cornell Division.

Description of Practice/Services Offered
Dr. Preter is in private practice and offers individualized assessments, consultations and
treatment within the field of child, adolescent and adult psychiatry. One focus of Dr. Preter’s practice is the treatment of girls and young women. Psychodynamic psychotherapy, parent guidance and psychopharmacology are offered, tailored to each individual’s needs. Dr. Preter emphasizes a developmental perspective in her clinical work.
Dr. Preter assesses and treats child and adolescent psychiatric disorders such as anxiety disorders, including obsessive-compulsive disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder, mood disorders (depression and bipolar disorder), eating disorders, attention-deficit disorder, and adjustment disorders (e.g. in response to divorce or other life stressors). Dr. Preter also assesses developmental disorders, such as autism / pervasive developmental disorder and is available to perform forensic consultations.
Dr. Preter holds a PhD in Psycholinguistics and has a special interest in working with youngsters with learning disabilities.
Dr. Preter has a European educational background and has expertise and interest in working with international families. Consultations in French or German are offered.

Dr. Preter works on publications in the field of juvenile onset bipolar disorder, velo-cardio-facial syndrome, and posttraumatic stress disorder.
