Nina L. Miller, PhD

My doctoral training, at the Derner Institute at Adelphi, had a psychodynamic theory and practice emphasis. I later received training in interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) for depression and cognitive-behavioral psychotherapy for panic and other anxiety disorders. I have been in independent practice since 1999 and also provide supervision and training in IPT to the psychology interns and psychiatry residents at Cornell Medical Center.

Description of Practice/Services Offered

I work with adults, both male and female, on relationship issues, self-esteem, depression, anxiety, and adjustment. The psychotherapy that I provide integrates theory and techniques from different approaches, primarily interpersonal, cognitive-behavioral, psychodynamic, and existential therapies. It is supportive and collaborative in nature. I work with clients to examine current coping strategies, identify any relationship pitfalls, address thoughts or beliefs that are getting in their way, explore the influence of their past, and clarify options that they have. The therapy often helps to reduce distress from a particular symptom or situation as well as to build emotion tolerance skills and self-acceptance.

Areas of Research

I have been involved in studies of interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT), a focused, pragmatic, and empirically-supported approach to the treatment of depression and other disorders. In psychotherapy efficacy studies at Cornell and Columbia University Medical Centers, I provided IPT to patients with chronic depression, alcohol abuse secondary to depression, social phobia, and panic disorder, as well as to adolescents with depression and pregnant women with depression.
