My laboratory conducts basic research on the pathogenesis of tuberculosis. We focus on the immunological role of macrophages in pathogen recognition and initiation of an immune response to Mycobacterium tuberculosis. In addition, we investigate the molecular mechanisms by which M. tuberculosis is able to survive and multiply within the intraphagosomal macrophage environment and cause disease. We use this work to enhance understanding of the biology of tuberculosis and to identify potential drug targets for treatment of a latent tuberculosis infection. Our lab does take students, if laboratory space is available.
