Dr. Yoon-Seong Kim earned his Medical Degree from Kyung-Hee University Medical College in Seoul, Korea in 1993. In 1997, right after finishing three-year military duty as a physician, he joined the lab of Dr. Tong H. Joh at Weill Cornell Medical College, Burke Medical Research Institute as a research scientist. To further his career as a competitive researcher, he was admitted to the graduate program in Weill Cornell graduate school of medical science. He received Ph.D in Neuroscience program in 2003 and joined Dr. Beal’s lab in the same institute as a postdoctoral fellow. Dr. Kim went on to join the research faculty as an Instructor in 2006. In August of 2009, he was appointed as an assistant professor in Neuroscience.
Dr. Kim’s research is focused on studying the molecular mechanism of oxidative stress in Neurodegenerative diseases including Parkinson’s disease. During his Ph.D. thesis work, he worked on the role of microglial NADPH oxidase (Nox2) in dopaminergic neuronal degeneration. He furthers his research on the role of NADPH oxidase-generated superoxide in dopaminergic neurons. Currently, his studies are directed at investigating the role of Nox1/Rac1 in oxidative damage in dopaminergic neurons by employing viral vector-mediated gene targeting and over-expression.
