Research Overview
Optical imaging of epilepsy and functional neocortex
The focus of our lab is on intrinsic signal imaging of epilepsy in the necortex of rats and humans. We are exploring several acute and chronic rat models of neocortical epilepsy in the lab. Simulatenous optical imaging and electrophysiology is used to investigate the relationship between blood volume, hemeglobin oxygenation and epileptiform events. We are equipmmed to work with voltage sensitive dyes as well and will be moving in this direction in the near future. Our human studies are done in the operating room on patients who are udnergoing brain surgery for epilepsy. We are able to image human cortex during spontateous epieptic events as well as cortical stimulation and somatosensory stimulation.
