Healing of tendon to bone

We are exploring the basic mechanism of tendon-to-bone healing. Many surgical procedures, such as rotator cuff tendon repair and anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction, rely on secure healing between a tendon and bone. The tendon-bone junction is the "weak link" during the healing process, necessitating prolonged restriction from activity. We are using histologic, immunohistochemical, molecular, and biomechanical techniques to evaluate the cell types involved in healing, the sequence of matrix gene expression, and the biomechanical characteristics of the tendon-bone attachment site. We are also evaluating the effect of growth factors on the healing process. The results of this work will allow identification of new methods for the enhancement of tendon-to-bone healing, which may result in earlier return to occupation or sports following surgery.
