Global Health

Dr. Chan has a keen interest in international healthcare, medical education and Ophthalmology, and is currently involved in helping establish clinical, teaching, and research collaborations in Southeast Asia, Latin America, and Africa. He works with an active research group that studies the implementation and evaluation of clinical information systems, telemedicine, genotype-phenotype correlation, and image analysis for ophthalmic care.

Current Projects include:

Mexico City, Mexico - Working with Dr. Virgilio Morales, Dr. Hugo Quiroz-Mercado, Dr. Gerardo Garcia and Dr. Maria Ana Martinez-Castellanos at Asociacion para Evitar la Ceguera en Mexico (APEC) to improve care for Retinopathy of Prematurity and Pediatric Retinal Disease.

Tanzania - Working with Dr. Warren Johnson, Dr. Dan Fitzgerald, Dr. Robert Peck, Dr. Grace Sun, Dr. Donald J. D'Amico and the faculty at Weill Bugando Medical College in improving the curriculum for Ophthalmology to the medical students and housestaff.

Southeast Asia - Involved in various teaching programs and clinical activities, including teaching of vitreoretinal surgery. Current active collaborations in Thailand, Mongolia, and Vietnam.

ORBIS International - Dr. Chan is volunteer faculty member and consultant for the ROP programs in Asia for ORBIS International, a New York City-based non-governmental organization focused on global delivery of ophthalmic care and education. He works closely with ORBIS International in assessing and implementing programs for education and management of ROP and pediatric retinal disease.
