Biography
Dr. Silver is Professor of Medicine and Director of the Leukemia and Myleoproliferative Center at New York Presbyterian-Weill Cornell Medical Center. He is also Attending Physician of New York Presbyterian Hospital; Medical Director; The Cancer Research and Treatment Funds, Inc.; sits on Board of Directors, New York State Society of Medical Oncologists and Hematologists; and is a Senior Advisor, Weill Medial College of Cornell University, Alumni Association, Life Member of the Cornell University Council. Dr. Silver received his medical degree from Cornell University Medical College. He was a Clinical Associate in the General Medicine Branch at the National Institutes of Health National Cancer Institute and then completed an internship in medicine and a residency in medicine (hematology) at The New York Cornell Medical Center. Afterwards, he served as a Visitng Fulbright Professor in Salavador, Bahia, Brazil. He then returned to the The New York -Weill Cornell Medical Center where he has remained.
Dr. Silver has served on numerous review boards and study groups; belonged to over 10 medical societies; held nine visiting professorships; acted as editor and reviewer of numerous medical journals; he has received numerous citations. In 1999, he was awarded the Catherine Pasmantier Award #147;for outstanding accomplishment and distinguished service to clinical medicine and medical oncology#148; and in 2001 the Timothy Gee award #147;for outstanding accomplishment as a compassionate physician.#148; Dr. Silver is routinely listed among The Best Doctors in New York and is listed in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science, etc. He is immediate President of the New York State Society of Medical Oncologists and Hematologists and is currently on its Exec utive Committee. His current interests are in developmental therapeutics for the leukemias, myleoproliferative and myleodysplastic diseases and in the area translational research response in the leukemias, myleoproliferative and myleodysplastic diseases, especially polycythemia vera and chronic myeloid leukemia. He has been the principal investigator on numerous clinical trials and is currently involved in evaluating novel small molecular agents such as imatinib mesylate and dasatinib in chronic myeloid leukemia, to name a few. Dr. Silver has written or edited 4 books, 35 chapters, nearly 150 abstracts and 250 peer-reviewed articles pertaining to these topics;he has lectured extensively nationally and internationally. He is currently the Principal Investigator at Weill Cornell Medical Center of an NIH grant study to myleoproliferative diseases, and Chairman of its Membership Committee.
Widely traveled, Dr. Silver has photographed most of the worlds wonders. He won severak honorable mentions in international photography competitions sponsored by Charles Pfizer, Inc. He earned membership in the Explorers Club for his pioneering work among the Indians of the Upper Xingu Basin in the Brazilian Amazon in 1965. He is an avid tennis player. He graduated from the High School of Music and Art where he was solo clarinetist in the Senior Orchestra. He was Student Director of the Symphonic Band at Cornell and solo clarinetist in the orchestra. He retains a serious interest in the clarinet and has played in numerous chamber music groups and orchestras.
