Global Health
I have been a member of the World Health Organization (WHO) Panel on the Selection and Use of Essential Medicines since 1989. I am also on related WHO Expert Committees and served as chair in 2007. My activities focus on drug policy and drug development, working towards the revising the policies used to develop a List of Essential Medicines and policies on the regulation of these drugs, as well as editing the actual list of medicines. Our latest work has focused on issues of drug recommendations for infants and children. I have engaged medical students in my work, including pediatric drug literature reviews for the WHO website and a proposal to add a needed drug to the Model List of Essential Medicines. Interested medical students may also participate in WHO internships in Essential Medicines at Geneva or other locations.
