Biography
Dr. Stewart is Professor and Chairman of the Department of Otorhinolaryngology at Weill Medical College of Cornell University and Otorhinolaryngologist-in-Chief at New York Presbyterian Hospital-Weill Cornell Medical Center. He received a B.E. degree summa cum laude from Vanderbilt University, and his M.D. from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He completed residency training in General Surgery and Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine, and received his M.P.H. degree from the University of Texas School of Public Health. At Baylor College of Medicine after residency training, he served as Associate Professor and Director of Residency Education in the Department, Chief of Service at Ben Taub General Hospital, and Associate Dean of Clinical Affairs for the College, before coming to Weill Cornell.
Dr. Stewart's clinical practice is general otolaryngology, and he has particular interest in nose and sinus disease, sleep breathing disorders, and head and neck trauma. He is the author of a textbook on head, face and neck trauma, as well as more than 20 book chapters and 90 peer-reviewed publications.
Dr. Stewart is also the Associate Editor of the American Journal of Rhinology, and serves on the Editorial Board of the Archives of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, and of ENToday. He is a member of many scientific societies, and is a Fellow in the specialty's senior scientific society - the Triological Society. He has lectured nationally and internationally, and serves on several national groups. He is the chair of the Education Council of the American Board of Otolaryngology, and also serves as chair of the Research Advisory Board for the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. He is a Past-President of the Society of University Otolaryngologist-Head and Neck Surgeons, and is President-Elect of the Association of Academic Departments of Oto-HNS. He is a Director of the American Board of Otolaryngology.
Dr. Stewart's research interests are in outcomes and quality of life research, and he has received research funding from the NIH, AHRQ, the AAOHNS Foundation, other foundations, and industry.
Dr. Stewart has received many awards and honors, including the Fulbright and Jaworski Faculty Excellence Award while at Baylor College of Medicine, and he was inducted into the Academy of Distinguished Educators there. He also received the Schvey Teaching Award from the Columbia/Weill Cornell residents in 2006. He served as President of the Houston Otolaryngology Society. In addition, he was awarded the Distinguished Service Award from the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, and the Houston Distinguished Surgeon Award from AORN. He is listed in Best Doctors in America, Marquis Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the World, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, and Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, and also in Best Doctors in New York by Castle Connolly, and by New York Magazine.
