Global Health

I am currently working on two global health projects.  The first project, which began in 2004, is looking at the pathogenesis of cerebral malaria, in collaboration with the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR) in Accra, Ghana, and with Shahin Rafii at WCMC.

In the second project, which began in 2008, we are studying ways to detect food- and waterborne bacterial, protozoan, and viral pathogens.  Bacterial and viral pathogens are major killers of young children worldwide.  For this project, we're collaborating with Francis Barany and Davise Larone at WCMC.

We have additional collaborators at GHESKIO in Port au Prince, Haiti, and at NMIMR in Accra, Ghana.  We have sent two students so far to the Accra site where they worked on the Cerebral Malaria project, and also did field research and worked in the hospital in Accra.  We are also looking to have two students from Accra visit WCMC.
