During his Fellowship in Medical Oncology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, working in Stephen Nimer#146;s lab in collaboration with Joan Massague and Malcolm Moore, Dr. Scandura defined a mechanism by which TGF induces growth arrest in normal hemotopoietic cells. The results of this work led to a National Cancer Institute grant on the role of p57 in hematopoiesis and leukemogenesis. He is Principal Investigator on this KO8 grant through 2010. Currently, in collaboration with other faculty members in the Division of Hematology and Medical Oncology, Dr. Scandura is developing translational research related to leukemogensis. He is investigating the subtle perturbations of how hematopoietic stem cell function contributes to malignant phenotypes such as acute leukemia. His work has been published in a number of peer-reviewed journals such as the Journal of Biological Chemistry, Proceedings of the National Academy of Science, Oncogene, and Genes Chromosomes Cancer.
