Research Overview

Dr. Carol Mancuso is an internist and clinical epidemiologist with joint appointments at the New York Presbyterian Hospital and the Hospital for Special Surgery. As a clinical researcher, she works closely with clinicians and researchers at both institutions and also is actively involved in teaching medical students and housestaff. In addition she is a faculty member and mentor to fellows in the Clinical Epidemiology and Health Services Research Master's Degree Program and the AHCPR Fellowship in Clinical Epidemiology and Health Service. Dr. Mancuso's research interests include chronic diseases, patients' experiences with medial care and methodological issues in clinical research. As a recipient of a Robert Wood Johnson Generalist Physician Faculty Scholar's Award, Dr. Mancuso conducted a longitudinal study to determine predictors of functional decline in patients with moderate asthma. The results of that study led to the development of an interventional study currently supported by the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute. The goals of the intervention are to provide education, self-efficacy training, and social support in a primary care clinical setting to help patients maintain and improve functional status. Dr. Mancuso is also a member of the Outcomes Unit and the Director of the Laboratory for Clinical Investigation at the Hospital for Special Surgery. Several current research project at the Outcomes Unit involve developing and testing survey instruments to measure patients' expectations and satisfaction with surgery for shoulder and knee disorders. These instruments will facilitate doctor-patient communication about the goals of treatment and anticipated improvements in functional status. Dr. Mancuso is also principal investigator on a project to study the devastating effects of rheumatoid arthritis on job maintenance. This longitudinal study of patients and controls is supported by the Alice Bohmfalk Charitable Trust and is being conducted at both the Hospital for Special Surgery and the New York Presbyterian Hospital. Dr. Mancuso is the former Director of the New York Presbyterian Hospital General Medicine Consultation Service. She is an active member of the Research Methodology Core, a multidisciplinary group of health professionals who provide expert consultative support to investigators throughout the Cornell Medical Center. Dr. Mancuso sponsors students in Dean Antonio Gotto's international student program and sponsors students in Cornell's Travelers Summer Research Fellowship Program for Premedical Minority Students. Dr. Mancuso also is an interviewer for the Cornell/Rockefeller/Sloan Kettering Tri-Institutional MD-PhD Programs and an interviewer for the New York Presbyterian Hospital Internal Medicine Housestaff Training Program.
