Biography
Dr. Ajay J. Mirani is an Assistant Attending Pediatrician and Site Director of Interventional Pediatric Cardiology at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center in Manhattan, New York City. He is also an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Pediatric Cardiology at Weill Cornell Medical College as well as at the Columbia University Medical Center.
Dr. Mirani performs diagnostic and interventional cardiac catheterizations on patients of all ages with congenital heart disease. His specialty includes catheter based closure of atrial septal defects, patent ductus arteriosus, balloon valvuloplasty for aortic valve stenosis and pulmonary valve stenosis and also cardiac biopsies for heart transplant patients. He also specializes in balloon angioplasty, and if necessary, stent placement for coarctation of the aorta and for pulmonary artery stenosis.
Dr. Mirani is also trained in performing diagnostic and interventional cardiac catheterizations for patients with various heart conditions such as, dilated or restrictive cardiomyopathy, ventricular septal defects, tetralogy of Fallot and its variants, hypoplastic left heart syndrome and its variants, tricuspid atresia, Ebstein anomaly, truncus arteriosus, and transposition of the great arteries.
Dr. Mirani is especially interested in researching novel catheter based techniques. He is a part of the pediatric cardiac catheterization team that is involved with various investigational devices new to the United States including:
1. COAST (Coarctation Of the Aorta Stent Trial)
2. Melody® Valve (Trans-catheter based pulmonary valved stent)
3. Edwards SAPIEN® transcatheter heart valve (Trans-catheter based pulmonary valved stent)
Education and Training
Dr. Mirani completed his undergraduate studies at Johns Hopkins University, his Master of Science (M.S.) degree at the University of Pittsburgh, and his Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) at Temple University School of Medicine. His internship and residency training in Pediatrics was carried out at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ) – Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.
Dr. Mirani then went on to complete further sub-specialty fellowship training in Pediatric Cardiology and subsequently, Interventional Pediatric Cardiology (cardiac catheterization) at the joint fellowship program between the Columbia Presbyterian campus and the Weill Cornell campus of the New York Presbyterian Hospital.
Dr. Mirani has also participated in humanitarian efforts to develop a comprehensive cardiac care program for children in the Dominican Republic and is currently planning on developing ties with a pediatric cardiology center in Mumbai, India.
