Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness worldwide affecting over 70 million people. This disease causes optic nerve degeneration leading to vision loss. Current treatments control eye pressure but vision loss may still occur. Our laboratory is dedicated to finding new treatments for glaucoma. To do so we have two areas of focus; firstly exploring the role of neuroprotective proteins to prevent optic nerve degeneration and secondly using a cell specific gene therapy approach to develop novel delivery systems for the eye. Our goal through this work is to slow and stop disease progression in order to prevent vision loss.
