BIOSKETCH

Dr. Michael A. Perelman is a Clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry, Reproductive Medicine, and Urology at Weill Medical College of Cornell University. He is the Co-Director of the Human Sexuality Program, Payne Whitney Clinic of the New York Presbyterian Hospital in New York City, founded over thirty years ago by his late mentor Dr. Helen S. Kaplan. He also is the Senior Consulting Psychologist/Sex Therapist at the NY Center for Human Sexuality, Department of Urology, Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center. Additionally, he is the Senior Consulting Sex Therapist to the Department of Urology at Greenwich Hospital.

A National Institute of Mental Health Fellow, he received his MS, M.Phil. and Ph.D. degrees in clinical psychology from Columbia University, writing the first sex therapy doctoral dissertation in Columbia’s history. In 1973, Dr. Perelman was Chief Intern in Medical Psychology at Duke University Medical Center. He was a 1974 Postdoctoral Fellow in sex therapy at Cornell’s Human Sexuality Program of the Payne Whitney Clinic, New York Presbyterian Hospital.

Dr. Perelman is appointed to the Sexual Function Advisory Council of the American Urological Association Foundation. He has served on several boards of directors including The Society for Sex Therapy and Research (SSTAR) and the American Association of Sex Educators, Counselors and Therapists (AASECT). He is a member of over twenty-five other professional societies, including the American Psychological Association, the American Urological Association (AUA), the Sexual Medicine Society of North America (SMSNA), the Society for the Scientific Study of Sex (SSSS), the International Academy of Sex Researchers (IASR), the International Society for Sexual Medicine (ISSM), and the International Society for Study of Women’s Sexual Health (ISSWSH).

Dr. Perelman maintains an independent practice in Manhattan, specializing in sex and marital therapy, and is certified by New York State and listed in the National Register of Health Service Providers in Psychology. He is also certified by AASECT as a sex therapy diplomate , supervisor, sex educator and sex counselor.

Dr. Perelman serves as a consulting editor and/or reviewer for several journals, including the British Journal of Urology International, Journal of Sex and Marital Therapy, Journal of Sexual Medicine, Journal of Urology, International Journal of Impotence Research and Current Sexual Health Reports. He co-authored Late Bloomers, published by Macmillan, with Carol Colman. Dr. Perelman also consults to industry, conducting clinical trials, as well as serving on advisory boards and speakers’ bureaus. He has published numerous peer reviewed journal articles, many chapters in sexual medicine texts and delivered over 175 invited presentations to professional meetings. Additionally, his work in sex and marital therapy is often featured in the media.
