Research Overview
Dr. Bruce Schackman is Associate Professor of Public Health and Chief of the Division of Health Policy in the Department of Public Health at Weill Cornell Medical College. His research interests include cost and cost-effectiveness analyses conducted alongside clinical trials and cohort studies; simulation modeling of comparative effectiveness and cost-effectiveness outcomes; and implementation science research regarding budgetary and operational barriers to implementing evidence-based medical interventions.
His current and recent research projects are in the following areas:
Economic evaluation of HIV testing and treatment
These studies evaluate the cost-effectiveness of HIV testing and treatment interventions in the US, and are conducted collaboratively with the NIDA-funded Clinical Trials Network and the NIAID-funded AIDS Clinical Trials Network.
- Principal Investigator for Cornell subcontract: Cost-Effectiveness of Preventing AIDS Complications (R37 NIH/NIAID)
- Principal Investigator: Economic Analysis of Rapid HIV and HCV Testing in Drug Abuse Treatment Programs (R01 NIH/NIDA)
- Principal Investigator for Cornell subcontract: Evaluating the Link between HIV Prevention and Treatment (R01 NIH/NIMH)
- Principal Investigator for Cornell subcontract: Pharmacogenomics of HIV Therapy (R01 NIH/NIAID)
- Co-investigator: Cornell Clinical Trials Unit (U01 NIH/NIAID)
Integrating substance abuse and medical treatment
These studies identify costs and evaluate the cost-effectiveness of pharmacologic treatment of opioid dependence in medical settings, and of hepatitis C testing and medical treatment in substance abuse treatment settings. The results will be valuable to policy makers in overcoming financial barriers to integrating medical and substance abuse care.
- Principal Investigator: Cost-Effectiveness of Buprenorphine Treatment for Opioid Dependence (Robert Wood Johnson Foundation)
- Principal Investigator for Cornell subcontract: Center for the Evaluation and Support of Integrated Buprenorphine Treatment & HIV Care (DHHS/Health Resources and Services Administration)
- Principal Investigator: HCV Treatment Cost-Effectiveness in 3 IDU Populations (K01 NIH/NIDA)
- Principal Investigator: Economic Analysis of Rapid HIV and HCV Testing in Drug Abuse Treatment Programs (R01 NIH/NIDA)
Global health
These studies evaluate cost-effectiveness and implementation requirements for scale-up of HIV testing and treatment in Haiti, and provide mentoring and research training opportunities for Haitian trainees as part of a long-standing Cornell collaboration with the Groupe Haitien d'Etude du Sarcome de Kaposi et des Infections Opportunistes (GHESKIO) Centers in Port-au-Prince.
- Co-investigator: Haiti AIDS Research Training: Models to Implementation (NIH/Fogarty International Center)
- Mentor: Haiti AIDS International Training and Research Program (NIH/Fogarty International Center)
