Teaching and Student Awards

Dr. Madelon Finkel Recieves Excellence in Teaching Award
Madelon L. Finkel, PhD, Professor of Clinical Public Health and Director of the Office of Global Health Education, was honored with her third Excellence in Teaching Award at a ceremony on June 29. Dr. Finkel received this honor based on evaluations from students enrolled in the required Public Health Clerkship, of which she is Course Director.

Drs. Pablo Rodríguez del Pozo and Laith Abu Raddad Receive Teaching Awards in Qatar
Pablo Rodríguez del Pozo, MD, PhD, JD, Associate Professor of Public Health in the Division of Medical Ethics/Qatar, was selected this year by the senior class at Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar to receive the Humanism in Medicine Award. The award was presented at the Senior Honors Convocation in Doha on May 3, 2011. Dr. Rodríguez del Pozo also received a Faculty Teaching Award for Medicine, Patients and Society II.

Laith Abu Raddad, PhD, Assistant Professor of Public Health, received a Faculty Teaching Award for his role in the Second-Year Pre-med curriculum.

 

 

 

Student's Mentored by Dr. Pablo Rodríguez del Pozo Win First Prize in UREP Competition
Students mentored by Dr. Rodríguez del Pozo won first prize (out of 74 projects) in the Third Undergraduate Research Experience Programme (UREP) competition under the Qatar National Research Fund. The students, Abdulhadi al-Saei, Sanah Sadiq and Arnab Chowdhury, were honored for their study, Down Syndrome in Qatar: A Survey of Public Perception and Educational Resources. The award was covered in the Dean's Bulletin, as well as in the Gulf Times.

Weill Cornell Students Receive Public Health Prizes
The Elise Strang L'Esperance Prize in Public Health is awarded to the woman student in the graduating class who best reflects the attributes and values of Dr. Elise Strang L'Esperance, who graduated from the Women's Medical College of The New York Infirmary for Women and Children in 1901. Dr. L'Esperance served on the faculty of Weill Cornell Medical College for over 40 years. Tracy Mak and Erica Miller received this year's Elise Strang L'Esperance Prize in Public Health at the Weill Cornell Medical Convocation on May 20, 2011.

The George G. Reader Prize in Public Health was endowed in 1992 by friends and colleagues of Dr. George Reader, '43, who served as chairman of the Department of Public Health from 1972 to 1992. A cash prize is given to the graduating student who, in the judgment of the Department's faculty, shows the most promise in the field of public health. This year's George G. Reader Prize in Public Health was awarded to Eric Goodman and Phillip Blumenshine at the convocation ceremony.
