Dr. Joseph Fins Named The E. William Davis, Jr., M.D. Professor of Medical Ethics
Dr. Fins Is Inducted into Alpha Omega Alpha and Gives AOA Distinguished Lecture
Dr. Fins was also recently inducted into Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) Honor Medical Society as a faculty member by the Weill Cornell Chapter. AOA is a professional medical organization that recognizes and advocates for excellence in scholarship and the highest ideals in the profession of medicine. In conjunction with his induction, he presented the Alpha Omega Alpha Distinguished Lecture at Weill Cornell Medical College on May 18, 2011. The title of his talk was “What if Hippocrates went to Weill Cornell Medical College?”
Dr. Madhu Mazumdar Selected for Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine Program
Madhu Mazumdar, PhD, Chief of the Division of Biostatistics and Epidemiology and Professor of Biostatistics in Public Health, has been chosen for the 2011–2012 class of fellows by The Hedwig van Ameringen Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (ELAM) Program for Women at Drexel University College of Medicine. ELAM is the only national program dedicated to preparing senior women faculty for leadership at academic health centers. Dr. Mazumdar’s selection was also covered in a Dean’s Bulletin article.
Dr. Andrew M. Ryan Honored for His Health Services Research
Andrew M. Ryan, PhD, MA, Assistant Professor of Public Health in the Division of Outcomes and Effectiveness Research and the Walsh McDermott Scholar in Public Health, was honored with the 2010 John M. Eisenberg Article-of-the-Year award from Health Services Research for his study, "Has Pay-for-Performance Decreased Access for Minority Patients?" According to the journal's editors and publisher, Dr. Ryan's paper "exemplifies the high standard of excellence in research that merits this memorial to Dr. Eisenberg and his vision of translational research to move our field forward into evidence-based policy and practice." Dr. Ryan received the award June 12, 2011 in Seattle, WA, during the AcademyHealth Annual Research Meeting. He also had five abstracts accepted for this year's meeting—an unusually large number for an individual investigator—and he presented two of them. One of his abstracts, "Has Public Quality Reporting in Medicare Reduced Mortality?" was selected as the best in its category. Read more in the Dean’s Bulletin.
Dr. Madelon Finkel’s Recent Book Receives Strong Review in Choice Magazine
Public Health in the 21st Century, edited by Madelon Finkel, PhD, Professor of Clinical Public Health, received a very positive review in the May 2011 issue of Choice magazine. The book’s contributing authors include many members of the Department of Public Health. The review states, “[The book] offers a much-needed discussion about the teaching of public health, a topic that is largely ignored in current literature. These edited volumes make a great reference for those who work in the public health field, including policy makers, practitioners, and researchers. Summing Up: Highly recommended.”
Dr. Alvin Mushlin Joins Board of New Comparative Effectiveness Research Journal as an Associate Editor
Alvin I. Mushlin, MD, ScM, Professor and Chairman of the Department of Public Health, has been invited to serve as one of four Associate Editors for a new journal, Comparative Effectiveness Research. This will be the first journal dedicated exclusively to this topic and will provide a forum for high-quality, peer-reviewed research papers, along with informative reviews and discussion articles. It will launch at the end of 2011.
New Appointment for Dr. Nathaniel Hupert
Nathaniel Hupert, MD, MPH, Associate Professor of Public Health and Medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College and Senior Medical Advisor to the CDC's Preparedness Modeling Unit, has been appointed to the Scientific Advisory Board of the MIDAS (Modeling of Infectious Disease Agent Study) Consortium.
This group is funded by the National Institutes of Health/National Institute for General Medical Sciences (NIGMS).
Dr. Curtis Hart Appointed Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Religion and Health
The Reverend Curtis W. Hart, MDiv, Lecturer in Public Health, Medicine, and Psychiatry in the Division of Medical Ethics, has been appointed Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Religion and Health, beginning with the March 2011 issue. The issue includes “A Note from the New Editor-in-Chief.” Dr. Hart has been a contributor to the journal since the early 1990s; in recent years he has been a member of its Editorial Board.
