About Us

Welcome to the Department of Public Health

The Department of Public Health endeavors through its research, educational, and service efforts to make medicine and medical care more effective and efficient. Our faculty members are experts in a variety of disciplines of critical importance to academic medicine including health services research, epidemiology, biostatistics, health economics, policy analysis, outcomes research, clinical informatics, medical ethics and the behavioral sciences. We lead and publish high quality, groundbreaking research in comparative effectiveness and outcomes research, health care delivery, and medical care. We help to shape health policy and influence the delivery of healthcare. Our work is essential in current efforts to reform the U.S. healthcare system. We also enhance the role of academic medicine in improving the quality of medical care and public health in this country and abroad.

The Department of Public Health is extensively collaborative. Our faculty partner with investigators in many departments in the medical college, including Medicine, Orthopedics, Radiology, Oncology, Surgery, Obstetrics/Gynecology, Psychiatry, Anesthesiology, Reproductive Medicine, Neurology, Genetic Medicine, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Pathology, and Urology. Faculty members also have longstanding collaborative relationships with colleagues in universities and government as well as private non-profit organizations around the world, and some for-profit companies.

In addition to our wide-ranging collaborations, the Department of Public Health offers special research consulting services in Biostatistics/Epidemiology, Medical Ethics, Comparative Effectiveness Research (CER), and healthcare informatics. The Division of Medical Ethics also provides a clinical ethics consultation service in NYPH. The Division of Community and Public Health Programs encompasses a range of clinical programs. Other department faculty provide clinical services through their roles as physicians in CIMA and on the clinics and floors at NYPH. The Department also collaborates on practice organization, quality improvement, patient safety, and clinical resource utilization.

Department members are involved in educational programs in the Weill Cornell Medical College and the CTSC/WCMC Graduate School of Medical Sciences, at the fellowship level, with CME, and through faculty training programs. Important educational activities are also conducted at affiliate institutions and through collaborative local and global programs, and the Division of Quality and Medical Informatics now also offers a Certificate Program in Health Information Technology and a Master of Science in Health Informatics.

The Department has several faculty members based in Doha, Qatar, who lead and participate in numerous and varied research studies both in the Middle East and in other parts of the world. Many of these studies involve collaborations with faculty in New York. They also teach widely in the medical school and pre-medical school curriculum.

Our roster of secondary, adjunct, courtesy, and emeritus faculty members, who play significant roles in collaborations with the Department, continues to grow. This attests to the fact that our Department is held in high esteem by our colleagues and that there is an increasing interest in public health among professionals in all fields of medicine. Affiliate faculty members come from numerous academic and administrative departments in the medical college, the hospital, and Cornell Ithaca, as well as affiliated hospitals and external organizations.

We encourage you to explore our Web site to learn about the Department’s research, educational, and clinical activities. On its pages you will find easy-to-locate information about our seven divisions, our clinical and consultative services, and our faculty and staff. The Web site will evolve and will be updated on an ongoing basis to reflect department news as well as developing programs, new course offerings, seminars, grants, and publications. We encourage you to visit frequently to keep abreast of our many exciting initiatives.
