Smartphones & Personal Digital Assistants (PDA)

Smartphones and Personal Digital Assistants address the growing need for instantaneous communication and data access by combining the features of the cell phone, productivity applications such as calendaring and email, and the ability to access the Internet wirelessly. There is no single industry standard smartphone or PDA device, so understanding the differences in features, level of support, and cost is important.

ITS offers three levels of service for Smartphones and PDAs:

Supported Devices receive a full suite of services, including email/calendar access, Wi-Fi connectivity, and full device support from the ITS Service Desk. Supported Devices may also receive optional access to Epic Haiku. Supported Device service is limited to Apple iPhone, Apple iPod Touch, and most flavors of RIM Blackberry devices.

Unsupported Devices include all Android, Windows Phone, and Palm OS devices. ITS will provide best-effort configuration of services, including email/calendar and Wi-Fi access. Device support from the ITS Service Desk is best-effort only, and will be charged at an hourly rate of $95.

Email and Calendar Only provides only email and calendar access for a faculty or staff member's personal mobile device. Wi-Fi and Epic access is not included. Device support from the ITS Service Desk is best-effort only, and will be charged at an hourly rate of $95.

Cost

For tagged supported smartphones and PDAs:

  • One time setup fee of $50, plus an additional $60 for Blackberry devices (to cover licensing fees).
  • Yearly fee of $250.
  • Access to Epic Haiku carries an additional yearly fee of $60 (to cover licensing fees).

For email and calendar only access:

  • One time setup fee of $50, plus an additional $60 for Blackberry devices (to cover licensing fees).
  • Yearly fee of $25.
  • Support incidents are billed at an hourly rate of $95.
