On Thursday, October 22, Microsoft will be releasing its new operating system, Windows 7. Windows 7 is intended to be a more focused, incremental upgrade to the Windows line, with the goal of being fully compatible with applications and hardware with which Windows Vista is already compatible. Windows 7, much like Windows Vista, comes in three different editions for the end-user: Windows 7 Home Premium, Windows 7 Professional, and Windows 7 Ultimate. For more information on Windows 7 and the different editions, please visit: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/default.aspx.

ITS is currently in the process of compatibility testing for Windows 7 and ITS-supported applications for Windows. We recommend that users wait until we have certified Windows 7 for these applications and can be fully supported by ITS.

If you are currently a Windows XP user planning to upgrade to Windows 7, Microsoft does not recommend it. Upgrading to Windows 7 from XP requires users to "to back up your current files and settings, perform a custom (clean) installation, and then reinstall your files, settings, and programs." For more information regarding upgrades, please visit http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/get/upgrade-advisor.aspx

If you are planning to purchase new hardware with Windows 7 installed, make sure that the system meets the minimum requirements outlined by Microsoft: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/get/system-requirements.aspx

ITS is diligently working on completing the application certification process to fully support Windows 7. In addition, we are also working on the Microsoft licensing package for WCMC. At this time, we strongly discourage departments from purchasing individual Windows 7 licenses.

After an extensive process of user interviews, internal research, and web development, I'm pleased to announce the launch of the new ITS web site and service catalog, available immediately at:

http://weill.cornell.edu/its

As with any major undertaking of this scope, we hope to continually improve the site and include additional information that faculty, staff, and students may want to see. We encourage you to send us your suggestions, critique, and praise to:

ITS-SC@med.cornell.edu

We will be further developing and improving the site based on your feedback in the next few months. We thank those of you who participated in the user and group interviews which informed much of the design and content of the site.

Shahzad Jafri, Chief Information Officer, WCMC-Q
Vinay I. Varughese, Senior Director, Information Technologies and Services, WCMC-NYC

Weill Cornell Medical College is in the process of changing the addresses for several of our main websites over the next few days at the request of the Dean's Office. The new web site addresses are as follows:

Weill Cornell Medical College: http://weill.cornell.edu

Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar: http://qatar-weill.cornell.edu

Weill Cornell Graduate School: http://weill.cornell.edu/gradschool

Weill Cornell Physicians: http://weillcornell.org

Please note that the newly re-designed Weill Cornell Physicians and Weill Cornell Graduate School sites will be available today and next week, respectively. These new sites are the culmination of significant feedback from faculty and staff working closely with technical staff in ITS and POIS.

Many departments and divisions of the college have a web presence as part of the main WCMC web site. These web sites are already accessible through the new web address, and should be publicized using these new addresses (e.g., http://weill.cornell.edu/research/).

Departments and divisions of the college that have their own web site address will be contacted by ITS in the coming months regarding possible changes to their sites to include "Weill" in their names (e.g., weillcornellmedicine.org).

Although the new domain names will be the publicly advertised web sites for all Weill Cornell web sites, ITS will continue to maintain the old domain names as long as needed to avoid any disruption of access.

Please note that WCMC and WCMC-Q email addresses have not been changed in anyway. All email addresses will remain exactly the same as they are today.

On behalf of the Project Argo Steering Committee and the Finance, Human Resources and Information Technologies and Services Departments, we are pleased to announce the launch of the Weill Business Gateway (WBG) today. The culmination of two years of work, WBG represents a significant advance for financial and human resource administration for our campuses in NYC and in Qatar. Our staff have been working closely with departmental administrators, consultants, and our colleagues in NYC and Qatar to craft an integrated system that can meet the increasingly complex business requirements of the Medical College.

This first phase of the Weill Business Gateway will replace the core functionality provided by the legacy mainframe system (FRS) in NYC and the existing SAP system in Qatar, while providing several additional enhancements. This initial launch is the beginning of a much longer process to transform how the Medical College conducts its core financial, HR, and administrative functions. In upcoming phases of this ambitious effort, we will be launching services that will reduce the use of paper forms at the Medical College and allow greater "self-service" for employees and supervisors to manage essential personal and departmental data.

As with the launch of any complex new system, we do expect to encounter issues in the first few months and are fully prepared to remedy them as expediently as possible. We ask that those who will be accessing the system be vigilant in reporting issues to the ITS Service Desk so that we can analyze and address them quickly.

Project Argo, the collaborative effort to develop and implement the Weill Business Gateway, is one of the largest efforts by the Medical College to fundamentally change its administrative systems and processes. The effort to improve our administrative processes will continue on for several years, building on the core system being deployed today.

Google has announced that its new web browser, Chrome, is available for Windows as a beta release. Beta software is by definition unfinished, which can cause instability, crashes, or data loss.

ITS does not support applications that are in beta. As such, ITS recommends WCMC faculty, staff, and students not use Chrome when accessing university systems and web sites. The browser has not been certified for compatibility with ITS services; consequently, you may encounter technical issues and support will not be provided. Chrome will be tested and certified for WCMC use when Google releases a final version.

The WCMC user community has recently seen an influx of e-mails pretending to be legitimate online services. These e-mails contain a links to websites then when clicked download a virus onto your computer. Please delete these messages immediately and do not click on the link.

ITS is currently taking the following measures to prevent the spread of this malicious e-mail:

All external non cornell.edu e-mails containing links to executable files are being deleted

Samples of the virus file have been submitted for analysis by our Antivirus and Desktop security vendors

ITS is blocking incoming messages from established sources of this attack

When Symantec distributes updated virus definitions, they will be automatically sent to computers on the WCMC network.

Apple Macintosh and non-Windows computers have not been affected by this virus.

ITS advises that the following steps be taken as a precaution against being infected:

Do not open internet links or email attachments from senders you do not recognize.

Do not download software from the internet

Do not click on Internet pop-up messages

This notification is intended for users of laptops running Windows XP or Windows 2000 that connect to the WCMC wireless network using the Odyssey wireless network client. This will not affect Mac users.

Over the past year, ITS changed the Odyssey client on the greater majority of Windows 2000/XP laptops; to proactively address the change, a report of all Windows XP/2000 laptops with the Odyssey client was generated and the users on that report were contacted to upgrade. In the process of reconfiguring reported laptops we found several laptops not on our list. This announcement is meant to address laptops that were not on our report.

Originally, the deadline was set to July 1st. The deadline was extended by the vendor to July 26th. On this date, Windows 2000 and XP laptops still using the Odyssey client will no longer be able to connect to the WMC Secure Wireless network.

To verify if you have the Odyssey client and upgrade your wireless network client, you can either contact ITS Support at 212-746-4878 or use the guide posted below.

To check for the Odyssey client:

Click on your start menu and select "Run"

In the run pop up window, type "appwiz.cpl"

Click "OK"

The Add or Remove Programs window will display applications installed on your computer

Look for "Juniper Odyssey" or just "Odyssey" (the list is in alphabetical order). If you find either of these items, you should proceed with the upgrade instructions below.

Do not uninstall or remove the Odyssey client through this interface.

To update the Odyssey client to the new supported wireless networking client, Secure W2:

If you assistance with this process, or have any questions, comments, or concerns then please contact ITS Support at 6-4878, or email us at support@med.cornell.edu.
