Listserv FAQs

Q: Can I send attachments to my lists?
A: Short answer: Yes.

Long answer: LISTSERV will happily pass just about any kind of attachment that you can think of through to a list without comment. The problem you will undoubtedly run into is more along the lines of whether or not your users all have mail clients that can deal with the attachments, either from the aspect of being able to read and decode them (some attachment formats are proprietary) or from the aspect of how large they are (some ISPs limit the size of an individual piece of incoming mail). You also need to keep in mind whether or not your subscribers really want to receive attachments; many do not.

It is usually best to place large files on an FTP or Web server somewhere and simply provide a link to them when you post to the list.

As an alternative please use the File Transfer service to send large attachments to list subscribers. When using the transfer service, you may specify the list address as the recipient to distribute the attachment to the entire list. If you have any questions regarding the transfer service, please feel free to contact the ITS Service Desk.

Q: Why is Listserv telling me a list is being "held"?
I sent a message to a list but got the following response back from LISTSERV:
The distribution of your message dated Thu, 08 Jul 1999 08:44:51 -0500 with subject "Test" has been postponed because the TEST list is held. No action is required from you; your message will be reprocessed automatically once the list owner releases the list.

A: A list can be held because an error has occurred during the processing of a message that has caused LISTSERV to automatically hold the list pending the correction of the error condition. The most common reason for this to happen is that the "daily threshold" of the list has been exceeded.

The "daily threshold" limits the number of postings that may be processed by the list in a calendar day (midnight to midnight, server time). The default is Daily-Threshold= 50. When the value of this parameter is reached, the list is automatically placed on hold, and the list owner or LISTSERV maintainer must issue the FREE listname command.

Both the list owner and the LISTSERV maintainer(s) are notified of the error. Your message will be distributed automatically when the owner releases the list.

Q: I receive messages from the list, but when I try to post to the list, I receive an error message stating that I am not subscribed to the list. What should I do?

A: This situation can occur if you are receiving mail from a list to a different address from the one with which you are posting. For example, if you are subscribed to a list as abc2000@med.cornell.edu, but when you send mail it says that it's from jfox@some_other_address.com, Listserv will not recognize these as the same person and reject the mail.

To repair this, either re-subscribe to the list with your proper address, or change your email program to reflect your correct FROM address. In Eudora, this is set in the Return Address field in Tools->Options->Sending Mail.

Q: What should I do when I receive a Daily Error Monitoring report?

A: Refer to the following steps to resolve the error:

  1. Check the subscribers of your list and confirm that the sender's address is entered correctly.

  2. Ask that the recipient (subscriber) to confirm that their email forwarding address is valid, the mailbox is not full to receive new incoming messages, and that the email account (yahoo, gmail or hotmail) is not blocking email from the listserv list address.

  3. Review the list owners, editors and moderators for the list and remove any invalid or inactive email accounts. To edit the list headers, log onto the Listserv web application.

Q: Is there a size limit for email attachments sent to Listserv?
I received the following error from Listserv:

Your message cannot be distributed to the www list because it exceeds the maximum message size of 300k. This limit has been set by the list owner and does not necessarily apply to the other lists hosted at LISTSERV.MED.CORNELL.EDU. If you have any questions, please contact the list owner, who can be reached at www-request@listserv.med.cornell.edu

A: There is no fixed limit to the size of an attachment sent to Listserv, but the default size for a message (with attachment) is 300K. While the size limit can be changed, sending attachments through Listserv is strongly discouraged.

If you have any questions regarding the transfer service, please feel free to contact the help desk.

Q: Can ITS change my list settings?

A: No. ITS does not manage individual lists.

All management of list settings including adding/removing subscribers and adding/changing owners should be handled by the list owner.

All owners of a particular list can be contacted by composing and email and addressing it to [LISTNAME]-request@listserv.med.cornell.edu , where [LISTNAME] is replaced by the name of the list, e.g., "teach-request@listserv.med.cornell.edu".

Q: Can ITS add subscribers to my list?

Q: I forgot the password to the Listserv Web Tool, can you tell me what it is?

A: No. If you forget your Listserv password, please go to the Listserv login page and use the "Get a New Listserv Password" box to get a new password.

Q: Who is eligible to create a list using Listserv?

A: Any Weill Cornell Medical College or NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital faculty, staff, or student can request the creation of a Listserv list.

Q: What happens after the form is submitted?

A: After the list request web form is submitted, ITS will process your request. Lists are usually created in 1-2 business days. Once the list has been created, all owners of the list will be notified.

After the list is created, the settings and maintenance of the list is the responsibility of the list owners.

Q: Where can I view or download the Listserv manual on-line?

A: View the online Listserv manual, both for list subscribers and list owners, from LSOFT.
