How ITS Defines a Project

What is a project?
ITS PMO defines a project as a temporary endeavor, in which the use of standard methodologies and tools such as charters, work breakdown structures, design principles, development lifecycles, communication and training plans will positively affect the quality of work, while managing cost and risk, to meet the business objectives
What is a project portfolio?
A Project Portfolio is any group of projects that are being managed together for any of a number of reasons, including:
- Projects are related to the same goal or set of Business Objectives
- Projects are interrelated via shared inputs and outputs
- Projects share resources
What is project management?
Project management is the discipline of planning, organizing, securing, and managing resources to achieve specific goals. In the context of WCMC ITS, it means applying the PMO methodology and practices to a project of work, in order to increase the chance of project success
How does a project differ from operations work?
Operations refers to work that is ongoing and repetitive. While the purpose of a project is to achieve its objective and end, the purpose of Operational Work is to sustain the business. When operations require a major change in process, input/output, or purpose, they may become projects until the change is complete.
