Domain Names

The Internet Protocol (IP) identifies a standard numerical convention for identifying devices that need to communicate with each other. IP addresses are difficult to remember so an alternative naming system was developed called the Domain Name System (DNS), an Internet service that translates domain names into IP addresses.
