We are pleased to offer a workshop on Presentation and Public Speaking Skills for Biomedical Scientists to be presented by Lisa B. Marshall, Presentation Skills Coach and Program Director, an Edge, Inc. The workshop consists of two sessions which target different skills; it is highly recommended that you attend both sessions, although you may attend only one. Each session will be presented twice a day. REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED --see below. (Sessions are limited to approximately 50 attendees each.)

The Art of Speaking, Part 1: Fundamentals Skills for Biomedical Research Professionals
This seminar will present information to help attendees organize, deliver and design professional presentations. For each section of the seminar, specific suggestions and guidelines for effective presentation will be provided using examples from the biomedical community. The section on organizing the presentation will describe how to plan the presentation (think about audience, determine objective, organize ideas, determine specific content and practice), and how to structure the presentation (with an opening, introduction, body, conclusion and closer). The section on delivering the presentation will describe methods to improve the attendees’ presentation style. This will include a discussion of both non-verbal signals, such as eye contact, gestures, tone of voice and verbal signals, such as transitions and choice of language. The section on design will describe guidelines for the development of effective visuals for use in a presentation. This section will be illustrated with sample “before and after” slides drawn from the biomedical community.

The Art of Speaking, Part II: More Skills for the Lecture Hall and the Hallway
This seminar focuses on additional advanced presentation skills for the lecture hall and hallway and consists of four sections: overcoming speaker apprehension, handling the question and answer (Q&A) section of a presentation, overcoming disasters, and presenting your research in 45 seconds or less. The first section, on handling anxiety, will describe specific techniques that can be used to help overcome presentation apprehension. The section on handling the Q&A session discusses ways to structure the session (how to open and end the session), ways to organize and deliver your responses and ways to handle hostility. The section on handling disasters includes guidelines for a number of situations in which you might find yourself (e.g., you have less time than you expected because someone else exceeded their time, the decision-maker is forced to leave before you have reached your key points; you lose your train of thought mid-sentence). The section on “what I do—in 45 seconds or less” will walk the participants through a formula for distilling their work into concise statements that can be used to describe their work to colleagues, supervisors and friends in less that a minute.
In an effort to make sure the presentations are specific to the needs of the attendees, Lisa Marshall requests volunteers from the audience to forward a sample of a complete presentation (any length) to her, by September 30th. This is a great opportunity to get a bit of free coaching from Lisa. If you are interested, please reflect this in your registration below. Participants will be provided with further details and instructions from both Lisa Marshall and Denise Cruz.
