Weill Cornell Graduate School Professors Receive Inaugural $3 Million Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences

Lewis Cantley, Ph.D., Margaret and Herman Sokol Professor in Oncology Research and Director of the Cancer Center at Weill Cornell Medical College and New York-Presbyterian Hospital, Professor of Cancer Biology in Medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College and Professor of the Program in Biochemistry and Structural Biology at Weill Cornell Graduate School; and Charles L. Sawyers, M.D., Chair of Memorial Sloan-Kettering's Human Oncology and Pathogenesis Program and Professor of  the Program in Cell and Developmental Biology at Weill Cornell Graduate School were named winners of the inaugural Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences. The prize, which carries a $3 million cash award, recognizes excellence in research aimed at curing intractable diseases and human life.

Dr. Cantley was awarded the prize for his landmark discovery of the signaling pathway phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K), which explains the growth of a cell and has major implications in cancer. Dr. Sawyers was awarded the prize for his work on targeted therapies in cancer treatment.
