Integrated Cholera Control in Haiti

GHESKIO and Partners in Health have nearly completed their efforts to vaccinate 100,000 people with a low-cost oral cholera vaccination.  In a recent article published in the Lancet, Dr. Jean Pape, Director of GHESKIO, and Drs. Louise Ivers and Paul Farmer of Partners in Health discuss the successful roll out of the mass vaccination program alongside efforts to improve sanitation conditions and access to potable water and the investment needed to strengthen Haiti’s public health system.

Engineer Jaques Andre Philippe Valentin shows off his non-government organization's new "chlorine factory." The chlorine is essential to kill the cholera bacteria, which is still rampant in Haiti. [photo from Catherine Porter/Toronto Star]
