Construction Begins on TB Hospital at GHESKIO
May marked the beginning of construction of a new 35-bed tuberculosis hospital at GHESKIO in Port-au-Prince. Made possible by a generous gift from BD (Becton, Dickinson and Company), the hospital will treat patients with TB and MDR-TB. The 2010 earthquake destroyed all three major tuberculosis hospitals in Haiti. Since the earthquake, rates of TB among children have increased six-fold. The new hospital will replace an inpatient tent hospital where GHESKIO currently provides TB diagnosis and treatment to over 1,000 adults and children.
