Robotic Surgery

Robotic assisted surgery eliminates the need for large incisions. In assessing long term data, comparable large open prostatectomy surgery versus robotic practice, it is evident that open surgical patients experience five times the loss of blood, suffer higher chances of infection, incontinence or impotence and have four times the risk of other complications. As well they are obliged to spend three times as long in the hospital as those who have undergone robotic assisted prostate surgery, or robotic assisted cystectomy surgery.

The da Vinci robotic approach is a type of minimally invasive surgical method that makes use of robotic equipment that imitates a surgeon's movements, only with greater precision, thereby offering patients improved outcomes. This has become the preferred surgical answer to bladder and prostate cancer at our institution in select patients. The procedure is performed using the da Vinci system, the only robotic surgery approved by the FDA.

The state-of-the-art da Vinci surgical system merges the incredible dexterity of robotics and the three-dimensional depth perception of computer technology, a characteristic missing from traditional open and even laparoscopic surgery. Da Vinci robotic procedures rely on a robotic arm constructed with seven degrees of motion to imitate the agility of a surgeon's wrist. Each instrument has a specific surgical mission: suturing, tissue manipulation, clamping, etc. Together they offer steadier "hands" at the surgical site directed by a surgeon.

Our physicians have performed over hundreds of robotic procedures combined and are continuously enhancing these practices to benefit patient outcomes.
