All students are required to have comprehensive health care coverage. WCMC has designed a two-part package to ensure that our students have access to high quality comprehensive health care:
Student Health Service
All full–time matriculated students at Weill Cornell Medical College and Weill Cornell Graduate School of Medical Sciences are required to enroll in the Student Health Service (SHS) and will have a Student Health Fee charged to their student account. This fee is required of all students and cannot be waived.
Payment of the fee allows matriculated students unlimited access to primary care services at SHS and access to the Student Mental Health Program. With very rare exception, there are no additional charges for services provided at SHS beyond your health fee. SHS does not submit charges or claims to health plans.
Student Health Insurance Program
All full–time matriculated students at Weill Cornell Medical College and Weill Cornell Graduate School of Medical Sciences must have active and current comprehensive health insurance. All full time students will automatically be enrolled in the student health insurance plan designed for WCMC, administered by Gallagher Koster and underwritten by Aetna Student Health. Enrollment may be waived if you demonstrate other comparable insurance coverage per WCMC criteria. This waiver must be repeated every policy year.
Charges for both the Student Health fee and insurance plan are made automatically at the time of registration on your student billing statement. Spouses, domestic partners and children are eligible to enroll in the student health insurance plan. Please note, while adult dependents enrolled in the student insurance plan can be seen at SHS, pediatric health care is NOT provided at the SHS. You will need to find a participating pediatrician or family medicine physician in your network.
The student health insurance plan provides a very comprehensive benefits package with substantial in-network, hospital and mental health benefits. Many Weill Cornell physicians participate in the insurance plan, as do many physicians nationwide.
If you are considering waiving the plan, please compare your costs and policy coverage carefully with the student health insurance plan before deciding to waive. Also check the availability of health care providers in the neighborhood with your prospective plans, as SHS may not be able to provide significant assistance in identifying referral sources for outside plans. The SHS physician is not enrolled in any health plans and therefore not eligible to be selected as a "PCP". Students with other health insurance policies are responsible for determining the specific benefits, limitations and differences of their policies from the Medical College plan as well as filling out required forms and settling financial issues with their insurance company.
Note: Our plan and related materials are currently being reviewed to ensure compliance with recent Federal and State regulatory requirements.]
You will receive additional information regarding the specifics of our health insurance plan and waiver process separately.
