iPad Frequently Asked Questions & Policies
August 2011

  • Who owns this iPad?
    • The device, as well as the peripherals (keyboard, cover, etc.), are your personal property to keep. Please treat them as such.

  • How will I be using my iPad in my courses?
    • We are in the pilot of a three-phase deployment at WCMC beginning with first and second year medical students. The planned uses for this academic year are:
      • Download and annotation of lecture notes and slides.
      • Download of lecture podcasts via WCMC iTunesU site.
      • Access to Angel LMS via a mobile web browser.
      • Access to select course e-textbooks via Inkling application.
      • Ability to review course grades via Angel LMS.
      • Ability to access PBL case documents, images, resources, etc.
      • Ability to access select WCMC library resources.
      • Ability to complete and submit course evaluations.
      • Ability to take notes, create presentations, spreadsheets, collaborate, etc.
      • Dynamic course calendars via iCal.

  • Does my iPad have a warranty or protection?
    • All iPads have two years of AppleCare protection and can be brought to the Genius Bar at any Apple Store for service.

  • Are there things AppleCare doesn't cover?

  • What do I do if I lose my iPad?
    • Report loss via email to edcentersupport@med.cornell.edu immediately. Your iPad may contain copyrighted content of WCMC so your device will need to be remotely wiped.

  • What do I do if I have damage to my iPad outside of AppleCare coverage?
    • Report loss via email to edcentersupport@med.cornell.edu and one of our staff will provide you with the appropriate steps.
    • Please keep in mind you are responsible for the cost of replacing or fixing your device. We strongly suggest you purchase a case for your iPad.
    • If you go to the Apple Store and they give you a new iPad, please be sure to email edcentersupport@med.cornell.edu to inform us. You will not be able to access the WCMC wireless network unless we set your device up for you.

  • What do I do if my iPad stops working or malfunctions during lecture?
    • Please see a staff member in room C-207 or behind the Weill auditorium. We have a limited number of backup devices loaded with our required applications. A staff member will quickly set you up with a loaner device for that day's classes.

  • How do I get help using my iPad?
    • Our staff will be providing open training and support sessions throughout the year. The first session is Friday, August 26 from 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM. There will be additional sessions during the first week of classes from 1:00 - 3:00 PM each day. These sessions will be held in rooms J/K of the Weill Education Center.
    • If you require additional help please refer to the iPad tutorials in the Angel iPad course. For further assistance please email edcentersupport@med.cornell.edu and one of our staff members will be in touch to schedule a personal support session.

  • How do I transfer or backup my personal files from my iPad?
    • We have set up a secure cloud storage environment (docs.weill.cornell.edu) behind the WCMC firewall for your use. Each student is given 2GB of storage space for their use. Please see the Angel iPad tutorials for information on how to setup and access your cloud storage.
    • You can also create encrypted backups of your ipad via a desktop version of iTunes.

  • How do I access the course podcasts stored in iTunesU?
    • The Angel iPad course has specific instructions regarding access to iTunesu.weill.cornell.edu. Please follow the suggested steps.

  • Will I be provided paper copies in addition to the electronic courses?
    • Select materials will still be provided on paper, including PBL cases and some lab manuals. Individual lecture handouts will not be provided on paper.

  • What do I do if I'd rather have my course handouts on paper?
    • Students will be provided with 150 pages per week of free printing in the Weill Education Center. Based on our analysis of past year course packets this should be sufficient. The Weill Education Center printers are supported 7:00 AM - 9:00 PM Monday through Friday. If you require additional or off hour printing there are resources available in the WCMC library for a fee.

  • How long would it take to download media and/or documents on the WCMC Secure Wireless Network?
    • Please expect to have a file take 0.6-1 MB per second to download to your iPad. For example, a 20 MB file can take 20 seconds or more to download. This download rate is largely determined by the capabilities of the iPad itself, not the network. Therefore, it's best practice to preemptively download course materials prior to attending lectures/small groups.

  • Recommendations:
    • Please backup your notes, apps, data and other resources regularly.
    • Buy a case for your iPad.
    • Do not share your passwords, download codes or other secure information.
