The medical school encourages us to become involved in community service projects. Student initiated volunteer projects in New York City have been a major part of extracurricular life since 1989. There is an Office of Community Service that provides administrative and other types of support to our efforts, and a Community Service Advisory Board of faculty and administrators. As part of student government, each class elects a Community Service Vice President who is responsible for coordinating the various service projects. We have a large number of ongoing projects, so there are opportunities for all students to select an area of personal commitment. If we don’t find an area of interest, we can always start a new project.
