]]> Course Description
The WIS symposium is a professional and academic event dedicated to encouraging more women to pursue careers in surgery. The Annual International WIS Career Symposium serves to discuss the issues and challenges confronting women as they seek to advance in a changing but still male-dominated field, and to share successes and advice for breaking the glass ceiling in surgery. Furthermore, the intention is to highlight the importance of advancing women toward careers in surgery by providing meaningful avenues for surgical professionals and students to interact, exchange ideas, and formulate effective strategies in advancing this important endeavor.
This symposium will promote both personal and professional growth for women in surgery. It is designed to promote and foster mentorship as well as a peer network for current and future women in surgery. It will also provide a forum to discuss contemporary issues and opportunities for women who have chosen or may choose a career in surgery. Participants will be able to interact with women who are thought leaders in surgery and pioneers in advancing women in surgery.

Target Audience
This symposium is designed for women who aspire for a career in surgery or wish to enhance their careers in surgery. The target audience is physicians, residents, fellows, nurses, nurse practitioners, nurse anesthetists, anesthesiologists, physician assistants and other healthcare professionals.

"Pioneers In Diversity" Awards

On Tuesday June 14th, 2011 the Office of Faculty Diversity, held the Inaugural

Pioneers In Diversity Awards Ceremony with Keynote Address by Dr. Alvin Poussaint, Professor of Psychiatry and Faculty Associate Dean for Student Affairs at Harvard Medical School, and a graduate of WCMC

These Awards will be presented annually. The Pioneers In Diversity awards include:

The Ida Sophia Scudder, M.D. Award for Excellence in Public Service awarded to a student
The Louis Wade Sullivan, M.D. Award for Excellence in Public Health Advocacy awarded to a resident or postdoctoral fellow
The Bruce Laine Ballard, M.D. Award for Excellence in Mentorship awarded to a faculty member

]]> The criteria for the awards are as follows:

The Ida Sophia Scudder, M.D. Award will be presented to an MD, PhD, MD\PhD, or PA student who has made significant contributions in the field of community service and providing care to the underserved.

Dr. Ida Scudder was a graduate of the first medical class that accepted women at Weill Cornell Medical College. After witnessing Indian women die needlessly in childbirth, Dr. Scudder was motivated to pursue a career in medicine to help them. Upon graduating from Cornell Medical College, she returned to India and founded a small clinic for women that gradually grew and became the Mary Taber Schell Hospital. Recognizing the dire need for more providers, she began training women, initially as nurses. In 1918 she started a medical school for girls which eventually became coeducational and is now one of India’s premier hospitals, the Christian Medical College & Hospital in Vellore. Dr. Scudder dedicated her life to the plight of Indian women and the fight against bubonic plague, cholera and leprosy, by providing services for patients as well as educating thousands of nurses and doctors in underserved areas to carry on her work. Dr. Scudder exemplified compassion, courage and extraordinary service to patients in need.

The Louis Wade Sullivan, M.D. Award will be presented to a resident or a postdoctoral fellow who has been an outspoken champion for health promotion and a public health advocate, especially for medically underserved populations.

Dr. Louis Wade Sullivan is a former house officer in the Department of Medicine at New York-Presbyterian Hospital. Dr. Sullivan was appointed Secretary of the United States Department of Health and Human Services by President George H.W. Bush. He was also the founding dean, director, and president emeritus of the Morehouse School of Medicine. He serves as the chairman of the board of the National Health Museum in Atlanta, Georgia and as a member of the Board of Overseers of Weill Cornell Medical College. As a policymaker, Dr. Sullivan advocated for a tobacco-free society, improving food labels, expanding the Head Start Program, advocating for funds for HIV/AIDS, and increasing the NIH research budget. As an educator, Dr. Sullivan has worked tireless to improve medical education and increase diversity in medicine. In addition to founding the Medical Education Program which later became a full-fledged medical school at the historically African-American Morehouse College, Dr. Sullivan also founded the Boston University Hematology Service and the Association of Minority Health Professions Schools. Dr. Sullivan exemplifies a commitment to promoting medical education, research, and public health.

The Bruce Laine Ballard, M.D. Award will be presented to a faculty member who demonstrates commitment to improving student life and to fostering a nurturing and supportive environment where students are able to thrive and succeed.

Dr. Bruce Ballard is the former Associate Dean for Student Affairs and Equal Opportunity Programs at Weill Cornell Medical College. Dr. Ballard directed students training in psychiatry first at Harlem Hospital Center, and later at New York Hospital-Westchester. He also directed the Travelers Summer Research Fellowship Program, which aims to increase the number of underrepresented minorities enrolled in medical schools. Dr. Ballard has chaired the Committee of Black Psychiatrists of the American Psychiatric Association (APA) and the Selection and Advisory Committee for the National Institute of Mental Health Minority Fellowship Program of the APA, published numerous scholarly articles, served on the editorial boards of several textbooks, and given presentations to various groups on ethnicity and psychiatry. As the Dean of Student Affairs, Dr. Ballard mentored and provided career guidance, and often, emotional support to all students. Dr. Ballard is known for having an open door policy and for giving his home telephone number to students in the event they needed to contact him. Dr. Ballard exemplifies the nurturing and supportive qualities of a mentor.

You are invited to the Service Providers Council’s Transgender Conference to be held Thursday, May 19, 2011, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the University Center, 525 S. State Street. The conference is entitled “Trans Actions”; its theme is “Increasing Access to Care.” The 2011 conference is organized by the AIDS Foundation of Chicago Service Providers’s Council (SPC) Prevention & Care Committees and the ad-hoc host committee. It will bring together local, state and national leaders to discuss best practices in serving trans patients & clients, provider cultural competency, employment issues, research-based programs and HIV/STI prevention for and with transgender populations.

Featured Speakers are:
• Joanne Hermann author of “Transgender Explained For Those Who Are Not”
• Jamison Green, PhD, an international leader in transgender, health, policy, law and education from the University of California, San Francisco

As the diversity of the US increases, so does the requirement for researchers who are able to tackle the complex diseases and health care needs of this changing population.

SPARC will provide faculty and trainees, especially those who are members of groups that traditionally have been underrepresented in academic research, with information and skills for developing and advancing their research careers.

What Is SPARC?

Welcome to the Tri-Institutional 2011 SPARC Conference: Achieving Successful and Productive Academic Research Careers. SPARC was conceived in direct response to the NIH’s call for a vigilant response to the underrepresentation of women and racial and ethnic minority investigators in academic research.

This conference was the result of a collaboration between the Weill Cornell Office of Faculty Diversity in Medicine and Science, The Rockefeller University Center for Clinical and Translational Science and Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center Office of Diversity Programs. The purpose is to provide a forum where members of traditionally underrepresented minorities in all stages of their academic research careers, whether they are students, residents, fellows, or faculty, can connect in a supportive and informal environment.

Our goal is to provide opportunities for participants to network and develop potential research collaborations or identify potential mentors as well as hear about the experiences of other academic researchers. We also hope that this will serve as a launching pad for similar initiatives across other institutions
