Dean's Message

I am pleased to announce the Office of Faculty Diversity in Medicine and Science, which will officially begin operations in July 2009.

The Mission of the Office of Faculty Diversity in Medicine and Science is to create a palpable culture of Inclusiveness, Diversity and Equity in Academic Leadership (IDEAL) at Weill Cornell Medical College. This culture will be created through recruitment, mentoring, promotion, retention and selection for leadership roles to develop and sustain a diverse faculty.

The office will be led by Dr. Debra Leonard as Chief Diversity Officer, Dr. Carla Boutin-Foster as Director for Diversity in Medicine and Science, and Dr. Rache Simmons as Director for Women in Medicine and Science. During this academic year, I have asked Drs. Leonard, Boutin-Foster and Simmons to work on the plans for the office, including a faculty survey and small group meetings, to identify issues important to our faculty and the best ways of addressing the issues through the work of the office.

I ask that you work with Drs. Leonard, Boutin-Foster and Simmons during the 2009-2010 academic year as they develop the plans for the activities of the new Office for July 2009.

Antonio M. Gotto, Jr., M.D., D.Phil.
