Dr. Francis Barany, professor of microbiology and immunology, was invited to speak at "Progress on Colon Cancer: International Collaboration Brings New Hope," a lecture conference co-sponsored by the American Committee for the Weizmann Institute of Science and The New York Times. The meeting, to be held January 18 in New York, brings together leading research scientists studying colon cancer. Dr. Barany will speak about the research conducted at his laboratory, which includes a National Cancer Institute-funded program that aims to create a comprehensive molecular profiling of colon tumors.

Dr. Barany was also named to the "Scientific American 50," the prestigious annual list by Scientific American honoring the past year's leaders in science and technology. Dr. Barany is recognized for his outstanding achievements in the development of a universal array genomic chip, used for the rapid and accurate detection of cancers and other diseases, especially breast and colon cancer.


Dr. Gilbert Botvin, professor of psychology in public health and psychology in psychiatry, delivered a plenary session address on school-based drug-abuse prevention to the Inter-American Drug Abuse Control Commission of the Organization of American States on December 7. Dr. Botvin's speech, entitled "Substance abuse prevention programs: A life skills approach," was addressed to the Commission representing 34 countries in the Western Hemisphere. The Commission meets twice a year on policy changes and new initiatives on drug-related matters.


Dr. Antonio Gotto, dean of Weill Cornell Medical College and leading authority on cardiovascular disease, was inducted as an honorary member of the prestigious Ludwig Heilmeyer Society for Progress in Internal Medicine during its Symposium in Cologne, Germany on October 22. His nomination was sponsored by the noted Swiss physician Professor Walter Siegenthaler. The membership recognizes Dr. Gotto's lifetime achievements in lipid metabolism and its related illnesses.
