REQUEST FOR CTSC SEED FUNDING APPLICATIONS

APPLICATIONS DUE – 5PM ON THURSDAY JANUARY 14, 2016

PILOT AWARD

$50,000 per year for one year
Funding Period – June 1, 2016 – May 31, 2017

Objective – To create opportunities for translational team research across disciplines and institutions, and between pre-clinical and clinical scientists and the community. Team Orientation, translational focus, pre-clinical studies should have near-term potential to translate into patient- oriented research, clinical trials (phases I & II). Emphasis is placed on drug discovery, targeted therapeutics, biomarker or device development and novel technologies, research on LGBTI.

Note: Second year is based on re-funding of the CTSC by the NIH

Proposals Must Have
A minimum of two Co-Principal Investigators, representing different disciplines (e.g., Clinical and pre-clinical) and from at least two CTSC partnering institutions. NIH definition of different disciplines have priority (areas outside biology, e.g., computer science, imaging, chemistry, mathematics, informatics, engineering)

Focus on translational and clinical research. The research should provide insights that could be generalizable to other projects. Basic research proposals will not be funded

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT AWARD

$20,000 for one year
Funding Period – June 1, 2016 – May 31, 2017

Objective – Strong community focus with a clear goal of facilitating the transfer of evidence-based practice. Fostering collaboration between the community, CTSC institutions and affiliates with emphasis on comparative effectiveness research and health disparities research, research on LGBTI.

Proposals Must Have
A minimum of one researcher from a CTSC partner institution + one community organization
OR
A minimum of two Co-Principal Investigators, from at least two CTSC partnering institutions and from different disciplines preferred
Facilitate the transfer of evidence-based practice to have a positive impact on community health

Eligibility for All Awards

  • Study team members may include faculty, residents and fellows on a research track, postdocs, and/or graduate students with an appointment at one of the CTSC partner institutions
  • Residents and fellows on research track, postdocs, or graduate students, all require faculty mentor(s) and proof of 2 year appointment to complete project.
  • No PI may have two concurrent CTSC awards and no investigator may be named on more than one application
  • A senior investigator may serve as mentor on no more than two applications
  • Proposals cannot have existing funding support
  • Only one re-submission for each application is allowed.  Changing/switching PIs or Co-PIs or adding an institution without substantive changes is not a new submission.

Checklist for Application Submission (at time of initial submission) (all applications)

A. Required Sections in ePAR Completed
1. Protocol Summary Page (COMPLETE ALL FIELDS)
2. Biographical Sketches - Upload as individual PDF files for all investigators and mentors
B. 3 Page Research Proposal (upload as PDF attachment in ePAR )
One PDF file with a maximum length of (3) single-spaced pages using no smaller than 11 pt Arial font. The proposal must include the following sections:

  • Hypothesis and Specific Aims
  • Scientific background, citing appropriate references
  • Significance of research (relating specific aims to future studies to be generated) and importance of funding to feasibility of the project
  • Research Plan (research team to be involved, study population if appropriate, methods, statistical analysis)
  • Description of how CTSC Seed Funding will prepare the PI(s) to seek external support
  • Timetable for potential submission of grants for extramural support
  • References and supporting tables/figures may be submitted on 2 to 3 additional pages





C. Letters of Collaboration/Support (upload as PDF attachments in ePAR )
Required from Co-PI(s) and Co-Investigators in support of the PI; letter should describe in detail the individual’s planned role in project. If a fellow, resident, postdoc or instructor is Lead/Contact or Co-PI, a letter from their divisional and/or department head guaranteeing 2 years of protected time for the applicant to complete the project is also required.

Upon submission into our Web-based ePAR system, your application will undergo a review based on several criteria


AWARD NOTIFICATION

Effective award date – June 1, 2016

The PI will be notified via email.  This will be followed by a formal award letter of agreement with regulatory and compliance requirements.  Once the additional information is submitted and the agreement is signed by the appropriate institutional business official(s), WCMC Office of Sponsored Research Administration (OSRA) will review and sign the agreement and notify the CTSC that funding can be released.

For a fast start on spending your award funds:
No expenditures related to human subjects or animals will be permitted until the CTSC is provided with a copy of the official IRB/ IACUC letter of approval.  Investigators are strongly encouraged to submit IRB and/ or IACUC protocols early in order to avoid significant delays in project initiation.  Applicants must also be current on institutional compliance regulations.
