Overview

Master of Science in Health Informatics

This program prepares students for careers at the intersection of health and information technology, through training in research, analytics, policy and management. As our nation strives to improve health and healthcare, these skills are vital to positions in health analytics, policy and management in academia, industry and government. The innovative curriculum applies a science perspective to health and healthcare, and incorporates a trans-disciplinary approach by fusing traditional methods from health services research with computational and informatics techniques. The Master's program includes courses in health information technology, health care delivery, research design and methodology and a mentored research project providing hands-on experience.

 

Students attending full-time can complete the program in 12-15 months, and part-time in 18-24 months. A 10-credit Certificate Program includes only the courses in health information technology, and can be completed on a part-time basis in 12 months. Applicants to either program require a bachelor's degree or higher, with background in healthcare, public health, information technology, computer science, engineering, biomedical research or a related field. Master of Science Program in Clinical Epidemiology & Health Services Research

The program is designed for those who wish to plan, implement and analyze quantitative and qualitative research studies using appropriate research designs. Students entering the program must have an MD degree, RN certificate, or a graduate degree in a clinical health related field, with three years of work experience; typically, physicians will have completed residency programs and nurses will have had several years of work experience prior to enrollment.

 

The core of the curriculum includes research methodology, biostatistical techniques, data management, decision analysis, health economics, and program evaluation. Graduates of the program are prepared to pursue academic careers in a variety of settings where data is required to answer complex questions. The emphasis is on training clinician researchers to teach research methods, conduct methodologically rigorous and scientifically sound studies, evaluate programs and perform cost-effectiveness and cost-benefit studies in a variety of populations.

 

The goal of the Global Health Track within the program is to train a cadre of health care leaders who will direct clinical and public health programs in developing countries, conduct research to improve health of the resource-poor, and teach the next generation of health care workers in developing countries. Physicians from resource-poor countries and other experienced health professionals can attend didactic training in New York during intensive blocks and then return to their home countries in the interim periods to conduct mentored thesis research and continue their clinical and teaching responsibilities. Currently, there are students enrolled from Tanzania, Haiti and Brazil.

Master of Science Program in Clinical & Translational Investigation

This multidisciplinary training program is primarily for practicing health care professionals who hold medical degrees or are in professions or training programs focused on clinical research. The program provides fundamental clinical research skills to those pursuing long-term clinical investigative careers.

 

Applicants may apply for a one-year track to earn an Advanced Certificate in Clinical & Translational Investigation, or a two-year track to earn a MS in Clinical & Translational Investigation. The advanced certificate program is comprised of a wide array of core curriculum classes in clinical research. The second year of the MS program track provides clinical research experience through a mentored clinical research project conducted at the Clinical & Transitional Science Center (CTSC). Supplementary to the core curriculum, trainees pursue specific clinical interests through electives. Master of Science in Health Sciences for Physician Assistants

This program is an ARC-PA accredited (Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant, Inc.) program that trains health care professionals to practice medicine with physician supervision in diverse clinical and academic settings. The 26-month curriculum provides students with fundamental principles of generalist clinical practice, along with training in general surgery, the surgical subspecialties, and principles of research design and application.

 

Graduates of the program earn a MS in Health Sciences for Physician Assistants degree from Cornell University and are eligible to take the certification examination administered by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.

 

Program applicants have earned a minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent, and possess significant health care experience prior to applying. Tri-Institutional PhD Program in Computational Biology & Medicine

The Tri-Institutional PhD Program in Computational Biology and Medicine (CBM), established in 2003, seeks to recruit highly qualified students from a broad range of backgrounds for a unique interdisciplinary educational opportunity. CBM trains students to use computational and analytical methods to solve problems in biology and medicine from the protein level to the organ level. The program brings together the exceptional educational and research resources of Cornell University in Ithaca, its Medical College in NYC (Weill Cornell Medical College), and Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center to provide a unique training opportunity at the forefront of computational biology and biomedical research. Tri-Institutional PhD Program in Chemical Biology

In order to prepare the next generation of scientists to work at the interface of chemistry and biology, the Tri-Institutional PhD Program in Chemical Biology (TPCB) was established in 2001 to blend the cultures and approaches of two traditionally distinct disciplines. TPCB is centered among three outstanding New York City-based institutions, combining faculty and resources from Weill Cornell Medical College, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, and The Rockefeller University to prepare students to use chemical tools and principles to solve problems in biology. With access to these campuses, students in TPCB have rich and diverse research opportunities from which to choose. Tri-Institutional MD-PhD Program (MD-PhD)

This collaborative program of Weill Cornell Medical College, The Rockefeller University, and the Sloan-Kettering Institute is one of the few inter-institutional programs dedicated to joint MD and PhD training. The mission of the program is to bridge the gap between laboratory research and clinical medicine, with a goal of contributing to improved health and enhanced quality of life by reducing disability and death from disease. The Lee Family Scholarship at the Johnson School of Management at Cornell University

Weill Cornell Graduate School has partnered with The Johnson School of Management at Cornell University to offer PhD students the option of earning an accelerated MBA degree in just 12 months. The PhD/MBA dual degree program is designed for students who want to pursue careers in science and business, preparing them for leadership roles in pharmaceutical companies, biotechnology firms, and other medical science-related businesses.

 

Weill Cornell graduate students must plan to have completed their PhD degree requirements including the oral defense and submission of the final thesis to the graduate school by April 30 of the year they plan to enroll in the MBA program at the Johnson School. They then join the Johnson School's Accelerated MBA (AMBA) program in May of that year and complete the MBA degree requirements by the following May.

 

Students interested in the PhD/MBA program will apply to the AMBA program through the Johnson School, which is responsible for all admission decisions into this program. Please visit the Johnson School's admissions page for application requirements and deadlines. Also, representatives from the Johnson School present anually in the fall an information workshop on the Weill Cornell campus. Information is presented about the AMBA program, admission procedures, and financial aid. This is an excellent opportunity to address any questions that students have.One additional requirement for Weill Cornell students, which is not listed on the Johnson School admissions page, is that Weill Cornell students must request a letter of current academic standing from the Weill Cornell Graduate School office of the Associate Dean at the time of their application submission.

 

Please note that the GMAT examination is no longer required for Weill Cornell students to apply. During the application process, students will use the date of the application submission as the date of the GMAT score (the date cannot be left blank)

To be eligible for consideration for the Lee Family Scholarship (see below), students must apply to the Johnson School for the AMBA program no later than Round 2 for applications (December deadline).


One Weill Cornell medical or graduate student each year (alternating years, two students) will be granted a full-tuition scholarship for the Johnson School portion of the Accelerated MBA program, thanks to the generosity of Charles R. Lee and the Lee Family Foundation. To apply for this scholarship, after applying to the Accelerated MBA program at the Johnson School, please send a letter with the following information by January 15th:

 

-Name and Weill Cornell ID# 
-Address, telephone number, email address 
-An essay of no more than 500 words that addresses why the student wants to enroll in the dual degree program, what he or she plans to do as a result of completing it, and any experience relevant to the program.
